BT security chief warns of privacy threats
BT's security boss has warned that social networks are making broadband users' sensitive information widely available on the internet.

Speaking at the RSA Conference in London, the home broadband provider's chief security technology officer Bruce Schneier stated that social media sites gather an array of personal details.

He remarked: "We are witnessing massive invasions of privacy and businesses are deliberately manipulating this."

Mr Schneier went on to claim that managing privacy does not come naturally to consumers, with many gravitating towards a particular social network because their friends use it regardless of its track record on security, reports eWeek Europe.

"The chief executives [of social networks] are killing it because technology is changing the balance of privacy," the expert insisted.

According to RSA, some 1,300 delegates from 50 countries covering virtually every profession in the field of information security attend its annual European conference.

The organisation will be holding a similar event in Beijing from October 21st to 22nd 2010.
