Home broadband access to be boosted by £98 PCs?
British adults without home broadband access will be offered the opportunity to purchase cheap PCs under plans unveiled by the UK's digital champion.

Martha Lane Fox told the Financial Times the scheme will enable the 9.2 million men and women who currently lack broadband access to buy computers for £98.

This low-cost package will also include a monitor, home phone support, a keyboard, mouse and a warranty, all of which are intended to help people get started.

Explaining the offer, Ms Lane Fox acknowledged inspiration and motivation are two of the factors to getting everyone in the country online, but she insisted cost is also important.

"We have an opportunity here in the UK to make sure we are achieving internet skills and usage as high as TV usage," she commented.

According to figures published last summer by the Office for National Statistics, around three-quarters of households have web access, while more than 30 million adults use the internet either every day or almost this often.
