Labour pledges £75m funding for digital inclusion
A Labour government would encourage everyone to pick up basic digital skills, according to Shadow Culture Minister Helen Goodman.
Shadow Culture Minister Helen Goodman noted that approximately ten million British citizens are unable to send an email, while around 16 million lack other "basic digital skills".
Under a Labour government, £75 million would be invested to ensure that everyone in the UK is able to access the internet, send emails and perform other simple tasks, she promised.
The last time Labour was in power, the party pledged to ensure that everybody would be able to access minimum speeds of 2Mbps by 2012 - a target that was ditched by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition, which is instead aiming to deliver Europe's best super-fast broadband network by 2015.
"A Labour government would switch half the money - £75 million - from the super-connected cities programme to a digital inclusion programme. That could help some two million people get online," Ms Goodman stated.
