Mobile broadband coverage extended to Mount Everest
A technology blogger has welcomed the news that mobile broadband coverage is now available at one of the most isolated locations in the world - Mount Everest.

CCS Insight writer Kester Mann noted European mobile operator TeliaSonera won the race to roll out 3G broadband and mobile coverage at Everest Base Camp.

The company now has the unique distinction of controlling the highest and lowest mobile base stations in the world - the Everest unit stands at more than 5,000m high, while it also has one located 1,400m below sea level at a mine in Europe.

Mr Mann praised the development, commenting: "Even in one of the most under-developed mobile markets in the world, music downloads, internet surfing and mobile email are no longer such far-fetched possibilities."

In contrast, Ofcom recently revealed that 87 per cent of the UK population are able to connect to a mobile broadband service.

However, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and south-west England were found to be lagging behind in terms of coverage.
