Home broadband users will be able to take advantage of the new MSN Video Player from its launch tomorrow.

The service aims to rival the popular BBC iPlayer and promises home users the opportunity of watching an even wider variety of television programmes over the internet.

It has been in a test phase since halfway through 2009 and will include content such as Peep Show, the Young Ones, Shameless and Midsomer Murders.

Microsoft UK's managing director of consumer and online Ashley Highfield has emphasised the fact that this new service offers home broadband users a better service than its BBC-operated rival.

He said: "[Our pilot's viewing figures are] significantly higher than ITV and Channel 4's online TV services, which suggests we are hitting the mark with our choice of content for the service."

Earlier this week, leading broadband provider Virgin Media announced the exclusive launch of Film4 HD across its digital TV platform, which could benefit those with an internet package from the firm.
