Super-fast broadband can help the elderly, says OAC
A new report has highlighted the benefits that super-fast broadband can bring to the elderly and disabled people.

The study, published by the Ofcom Advisory Committee (OAC), gives reference to a number of initiatives that are already in use or being developed, while it also investigates ways in which some services could be improved with access to faster broadband.

Among the facilities it claimed can benefit consumers in this demographic are remote health monitoring and consultations, which it pointed out could enable some patients to be diagnosed without having to leave their home.

Other advantages include befriending schemes, teleworking and life-long learning, all of which can promote independent living and help people "lead healthier, more fulfilling lives", the OAC stated.

"Next-generation broadband is about much more than multi-player gaming, faster music downloads or high definition TV," commented the body's chairman Jo Connell.

Last month, Ofcom revealed that half of over-55s have home broadband, while 36 per cent use email every day.
