UK mobile broadband will not get LTE upgrade until 2015, says ITM
It would not be "economically viable" for the technology to be deployed before then, the analyst has claimed.
The strategy and market intelligence firm claimed it will not be "economically viable" for the infrastructure to be improved any sooner than this, as the country's existing HSPA networks will still be able to cope with usage demands in the medium term.
According to the company, traffic congestion on this kind of broadband connection is only likely to appear in three years' time and even then it will be limited to "certain hotspot areas".
This means there is little chance of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology being deployed in the near future, the organisation forecast.
"Current UK mobile network deployments are so dense that it would make the introduction of LTE both an investment-heavy and somewhat unjustifiable decision," said senior ITM analyst Dimitris Mavrakis.
Last week, 3 Mobile and T-Mobile announced they have more than 12,000 3G broadband sites across the country thanks to the Mobile Broadband Network Ltd joint venture.
