Virgin Media upgrades broadband security in Scotland
Broadband bundle specialist Virgin Media has decided to improve the security on its digital TV service.

Improved encryption technology will be used to prevent set-top boxes from gaining unauthorised access to its digital television service, according to the Scotsman newspaper.

Rick Bond of Bond Electronics, which installs and services television systems in Edinburgh, told the paper that the problem lies in having only one cable network for the city which hundreds of thousands of homes use.

He said: "Of these, I would say over 50 per cent are 'illegitimate' in large areas of the city, sourced from Sunday markets or online, so it's a huge problem."

Edinburgh will begin the switchover from analogue to digital television on June 1st 2011.

As part of the 'digital dividend', the switchover is expected to help speed up the roll out of next generation high-speed wireless broadband.

The European Commission has recommended national governments to make the old analogue frequencies available for this purpose.
