A man who has been helping to improve broadband connectivity in Bristol in the past four years is taking a new role at the local council.

Stephen Hilton has led the Connecting Bristol programme as part of his role as digital manager at the authority, which included projects to increase wireless and broadband take-up.

He has now been appointed at Bristol City Council's service director on a two-year fixed-term basis, reports Bristol 24-7.

Mr Hilton will be tasked with bringing together the local authority's digital, green and European agendas.

"I am delighted to have got the job and look forward to creating real value for Bristol's businesses and communities over the next two years," he stated.

Last year, the council announced it was starting a scheme to improve broadband access for low income families with children aged between seven and 14.

People in this bracket were invited to apply for a grant to help them pay for computers and an internet connection.
