Companies are increasingly making the transition to web-based applications, taking advantage of business broadband to improve their mobility.

Leigh Geary, webmaster of CoolSmartPhone.com, has claimed that this trend is part of a larger move away from traditional desktop PCs and towards newer devices.

He said that this will also become more apparent in the home, with a growing number of users moving towards netbooks as a way of using their broadband easily, whether to check mail, surf the web or use applications.

Mr Geary suggested that companies are beginning to tailor their products to this model, with both Microsoft and Google releasing services designed for home and business broadband users following this pattern.

He said: "The device-bound applications of old are slowly fading away as people use web-based applications like calendars, word processors and web-based email for their work."

John Herlihy, vice-president of global ad operations at Google, recently claimed that desktop PCs would be redundant by 2013.
