More than half of broadband users in the UK have owned up to making password information available online.

A survey of 2,000 adults in Britain with access to the internet carried out by credit reference agency Experian revealed that 51 per cent used the same password for some or all of their online accounts.

Furthermore, three of the most popular passwords - a person's town of birth, past schools or date of birth - were found to be among the information that respondents were happy to publish on the internet.

Pete Turner of Experian cautioned that the UK's broadband users are not heeding the warnings of ID fraud.

"The internet is accessible to almost everyone and as the number of users grow, so do those using it for criminal purposes," Mr Turner remarked.

According to UK fraud prevention service CIFAS, there were 77,600 recorded cases of ID fraud in 2008, 100 more than the total for the previous year.
