BT is offering customers who take out a broadband bundle the chance to upgrade to a fibre optic service at no extra cost when it becomes available in their area.

Announcing that it has "upped the ante in the broadband market", the telecoms giant revealed that new customers who sign up for BT Total Broadband Options 2 or 3 and a calls package will be able to take advantage of the promotion.

The company's fibre optic broadband proposition, BT Infinity, offers downloads at speeds of up to 40Mb/s and what it described as "significantly faster" uploads than Virgin Media.

Managing director of BT's consumer division John Petter commented: "We are the only company offering you an upgrade to fibre for no extra monthly cost and the only company to offer free line installation across all new bundles."

Earlier this month, the company revealed more than 100,000 homes and businesses in Scotland are able to access its fibre optic broadband network.
