BT broadband network must be reliable, says expert
The resilience of BT's broadband network has been called into question by a Scottish thinktank.

According to the Herald, the broadband bundle provider's infrastructure failed five times last week, with disruption experienced in the Edinburgh area and across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

Chairman of the Digital Scotland working group Michael Fourman said the problems highlight the need for BT to strengthen its network and claimed many sectors - including transport, health and education - are reliant upon "always-on connectivity".

He stated reliable broadband is essential for the country, commenting: "In order to operate effectively in the modern world, Scotland needs a modern, robust core network reaching all communities, as recommended in our recent Digital Scotland report."

At the end of last month, a fault at BT left around one million homes across the UK without broadband access, with a spokesperson telling the Press and Journal the outage ran from around 19:00 BST on October 29th 2010 to 02:00 the next morning.
