East Cleveland broadband plans could be delayed by landowner
York Potash could prevent a broadband rollout from taking place on its land.
Under the proposals, faster speeds will be rolled out to Lingdale, Stanghow, Liverton, Boosbeck and other local villages.
However, Redcar and Cleveland Borough councillor Steve Kay warned that York Potash is refusing to allow the deployment to take place on its land, reports the Northern Echo.
Despite the setback, Mr Kay is not ruling out the possibility of York Potash having a change of heart. If it goes ahead, the broadband rollout will provide a "much-needed economic fillip" for the area, he claimed.
Mr Kay pointed out: "It is not only Redcar and Cleveland who could benefit, but large tracts of North Yorkshire as well."
Responding to the comments, a spokesman from York Potash said the company is looking for an internet service provider to help improve connectivity in rural areas, but has so far been unable to identify one.
