HYLAS 1 broadband satellite completes in-orbit testing
Avanti Communications has announced the completion of in-orbit testing on its HYLAS 1 broadband satellite.

The trial confirmed HYLAS 1 is largely working as planned, although its performance was found to be higher than expected in some areas.

Following the initial success of the project, the satellite's first UK customer broadband lines will be delivered next week. Some 5,000 end users have signed up to test the service.

David Williams, chief executive of Avanti, said HYLAS 1 has so far proved to be a "complete success" and claimed the company is in a strong position for future growth.

"With Europe's first fully operational broadband satellite, Avanti will now provide a range of satellite data communications services to consumers, enterprise and governmental organisations across the UK and Europe," he added.

In December 2010, Avanti announced it had won a five-year contract to provide BT with its broadband services via HYLAS 1. The satellite launched into orbit on November 26th.
