Mobile broadband speeds increasing, study shows
Mobile broadband services across the world have improved substantially in recent times, according to a study from Cisco Systems.

The report, which was based on research carried out by Said Business School at Oxford University, revealed that average mobile broadband download speeds have increased by more than a third since 2009 to reach 936Kb/s.

Meanwhile, upload speeds have risen by more than 100 per cent over the same period and now stand at 277Kb/s.

Although Cisco claimed the quality of the technology is still "far below" that of fixed-line home broadband connections, around 30 per cent of users are able to access throughput speeds of more than 1.3Mb/s.

"We are beginning to see how mobile broadband access is shaping the future of the internet," remarked Professor Maria Rosalia Vicente of the University of Oviedo.

Virgin Media was named as the best mobile broadband provider in the UK at the recent PC Pro Reliability & Service Awards, with O2 finishing as runner-up.
