A specially convened summit on rural broadband has been held in Scotland.

Rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead spoke to representatives from local authorities, Scottish Enterprise and the telecoms industry about the comprehensive rollout of broadband throughout the nation's countryside at the event.

He said the country's government is committed to supporting communities living in such areas.

"The provision of broadband is key to unlocking the next stage of Scotland's development and ensuring that everyone has access to the opportunities technology brings," Mr Lochhead stated.

He added that the issue is of growing importance as the number of people living and working in such regions has risen in recent years.

His comments follow remarks from Stephen Leckie, the chair of a tourism taskforce set up by the government.

The executive said it is not good enough that there are large areas of Scotland that do not have any broadband access at the moment, the Scotsman reported last week.
