Scots rural broadband set to expand
Scotland's rural broadband network looks set to expand further, with new plans announced to bring improvements to sparsely populated communities.

Perth and Kinross Council, the Scottish government, the UK government and the European Union will come together to bring residents in central Scotland better online infrastructure.

Within three years, the collaborative project hopes to bring locals download speeds of at least 2Mbps.

While this may not seem that big a step up, a number of small farming communities still struggle with speeds of 56Kbps on dial-up connections and there are concerns this is harming the economy.

Council Leader Ian Millar said: "In the interests of communities and businesses alike, it is vital that broadband access expands as quickly as possible in Perth and Kinross."

Mr Millar added that while this project has relatively low ambitions, further schemes to bring high-speed broadband are expected to be revealed in the coming months.

Kinross, Luncarty, Methven, Milnathort, Pitlochry, Perth, Stanley and St Madoes are among the communities set to benefit.
