Shoreditch broadband rollout 'embarrassing', says local MP
The rollout of superfast broadband in Shoreditch has been labelled an "embarrassment" by local Labour MP Meg Hillier.

There have been plans to turn the area into a so-called Tech City over the past few years, which would mean the majority of businesses in the district would be connected to high-speed broadband.

However, one-third of companies in Shoreditch still do not have access to adequate internet, the Islington Gazette reports.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport informed the newspaper there are grants of £3,000 available to firms to help them to connect to better broadband, but Ms Hillier commented: "You can't just throw money at a problem - it's the infrastructure that needs changing."

Ms Hillier raised the issue during a parliamentary debate last week, asking what Prime Minister David Cameron would do to address the issue.

Mr Cameron stated Culture Secretary Sajid Javid is "working very hard" to ensure the superfast technology is available to the remaining businesses soon.

In addition, local people are campaigning for London Mayor Boris Johnson to bring fibre optic broadband to firms in Shoreditch, with an online petition supporting the cause.
