One in six of all the webpages accessed by broadband users in the UK in June 2010 was related to Facebook.

The latest data from Experian Hitwise has revealed that over the course of the month, the social media giant accounted for 16.73 per cent of page views - more than double the amount of its nearest rival, Google.

Online auction site eBay also proved popular with home broadband and business broadband users across the country, making up 5.39 per cent of total page views.

Despite these impressive figures from Facebook, Google still held its position as the overall most visited website. It attracted 9.59 per cent of total market share in June, compared to Facebook's 7.14 per cent.

Last month, the social networking site revealed that it now has 500 million active users, a figure which co-founder Mark Zuckerberg described as an "important milestone".

"Now a lot more people have the opportunity to stay connected with the people they care about," he added.
