Virgin Media's chief executive has again hit out at rival internet service providers for failing to give consumers accurate broadband speeds.

Neil Berkett compared the practise of advertising headline download speeds that few - if any - customers will be able to access to the selling of "dodgy" financial products with flat interest rates, rather than an annual percentage rate.

He claimed this was prevalent ten to 15 years ago, but while it may have died out, companies are still getting away with misleading broadband advertising.

"Now you can say you are providing up to 20Mb/s but fail to deliver. It's a ludicrous situation," Mr Berkett was quoted by the Express as saying.

Research released earlier this month by the home and business broadband provider revealed that nine in ten UK consumers believe the way packages are marketed is misleading.

Less than a tenth of respondents said they feel advertised broadband speeds tend to be accurate.
