Which? calls for end to rollover broadband contracts
Consumer body Which? has praised proposals by regulator Ofcom that seek to ban the practice of broadband and phone companies tying customers into rolling contracts.

The organisation said it had been campaigning since March 2010 against the practice, which sees policies automatically renewed once they reach their end unless consumers actively opt out.

Which? phone and broadband expert Ceri Stanaway described the Ofcom proposal as "great news" that will allow people to seek out better deals if they are unhappy with their current provider.

"Phone and broadband companies should focus on offering great value deals with top-notch customer service, so that their customers are happy to stay with them voluntarily," the official added.

According to estimates from Ofcom, about 15 per cent of British residential consumers are currently on rollover contracts.

A consultation period on the regulator's proposals is now underway, with this period set to come to a close on May 12th.
