Ask4 acquires broadband contracts from defunct RiPWiRE
Independent internet service provider (ISP) Ask4 has stepped in to acquire all the broadband contracts previously held by the now-defunct RiPWiRE.

As of February 1st 2012, RiPWiRE - which offered super-fast broadband services via the Digital Region network - has ceased trading, creating doubt among customers about what would happen to their internet connection.

The telecoms firm took the decision to close as a result of the challenging economic climate and the widely-reported problems with Digital Region, which has struggled to attract subscribers after failing to land a major ISP partner.

An investigation was launched earlier this month to find out why there has been so little interest in the £90 million project, which has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund, regional development agency Yorkshire Forward and four local authorities - Sheffield City Council, Barnsley Council, Rotherham Council and Doncaster Council.

Announcing its acquisition of the broadband customer contracts, Ask4 revealed it had been in negotiations to ensure that all RiPWiRE Digital Region subscribers will have their accounts transferred without suffering any loss of service.

The ISP is currently arranging the transition of former RiPWiRE customers to its network and is planning to get in touch with them over the coming days.

Jonathan Burrows, managing director of Ask4, confirmed that the ISP is eager to ensure all affected customers experience a smooth transition to their new provider.

He commented: "We have been involved with the Digital Region project since its inception and will continue to work with the Digital Region management team and other stakeholders to develop the service.

"We believe in offering fantastic service and fanatical support to our customers and are working hard to move RiPWiRE's customers with as little disruption as possible."

Mr Burrows went on to insist all RiPWiRE subscribers will be migrated to the Ask4 network with "absolutely minimal downtime".
