Broadband scheme boosts Northumberland connection speeds
The iNorthumberland scheme has brought faster broadband to residents across the county.
Parts of Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth, Cramlington and Morpeth have already had their lines upgraded as part of the iNorthumberland scheme, with several more local towns and villages set to benefit from the improvement work.
According to the News Post Leader, iNorthumberland's community engagement officer John Cooper revealed more than 12,000 residents have so far given their backing to the project.
Their support is vital, as one-fifth of citizens in Northumberland have never been on the internet - a figure Mr Cooper described as "massive".
"We don't want to be in a situation where some people are disadvantaged and aren't able to get online," he stressed.
The iNorthumberland programme was established to meet the government's target of delivering super-fast broadband to 90 per cent of the population by 2015.
This goal is particularly difficult to achieve in Northumberland, due to the challenging terrain and the number of isolated communities.
