A further 1.2 million properties across the UK will be hooked up to super-fast speeds in the latest phase of BT's fibre optic broadband rollout.

The telecoms giant has added another 99 exchanges to the list of those it plans to upgrade, with the work scheduled to be carried out before or during spring 2014.

Approximately 600,000 properties - the majority of which are spread across Scotland, the Midlands and the north-east and north-west of England - are served by these exchanges.

In addition, another 600,000 will be hooked up to fibre broadband thanks to so-called "in-fill" work in locations that have previously been included in the rollout.

BT has now confirmed a total of 1,700 exchange areas that are set to comprise the bulk of its commercial super-fast broadband network.

Mike Galvin, managing director of next-generation access at Openreach, BT's local access network business, said: "The UK is making great progress with super-fast broadband and this latest phase of work will keep up the momentum."
