Every telephone exchange in Wales is to be upgraded to superfast broadband over the next two years.

The Superfast Cymru high-speed technology rollout programme is aiming to connect 96 per cent of Welsh homes and businesses to better broadband by 2016, with telephone exchange upgrades forming part of its connectivity work.

Speaking to BBC News, Director for Wales at BT Ann Benyon said this was "probably the biggest engineering programme in Wales" to have taken place over the last decade.

She added: "This is big news for Wales, as people will now know when work will start for every single telephone exchange in Wales."

Figures show that by June this year, 58 per cent of residential properties and commercial buildings in the country had already been connected to superfast broadband, falling slightly behind the rest of the UK, where around 78 per cent of premises currently have access.

However, by the time Superfast Cymru's work is complete, Wales looks set to be one of the best connected countries in Europe.
