Fibre optic broadband deal signed by Barnsley Council
Digital Region will bring super-fast broadband speeds to council buildings and schools in Barnsley.
The local authority signed a five-year contract with the organisation, which is aiming to bring super-fast broadband speeds to 97 per cent of properties in South Yorkshire.
Under the terms of the £1 million agreement, Digital Region will provide high-speed broadband to council buildings and schools across Barnsley by 2012.
Chief executive of Digital Region David Carr claimed Barnsley Council's communications will be 'future-proofed' by being connected to its network.
Mr Carr added: "Barnsley now has the infrastructure to support a thriving digital economy, which creates employment and enables residents and businesses to benefit from cutting-edge services."
BT is also looking to increase the prevalence of fibre optic broadband in the UK, with its own plans set to make the technology available to two-thirds of properties by 2015.
