A new study has highlighted the growing demand placed on home and business broadband networks around the world.

Experts at IMS Research claimed the number of devices which connect to the internet will reach five billion later on this month, with this figure set to increase rapidly over the next decade.

By 2020, the company predicted there will be a worldwide total of 22 billion internet-connected products, including tablet PCs, eBook readers, digital picture frames, netbooks and regular PCs.

IMS Research president Ian Weightman stated there are already more than a billion computers that regularly access the web, an amount which he said is "growing steadily".

Mr Weightman added: "The potential for greatest growth comes from the third wave, which will include machine-to-machine deployments."

His comments come after a report from Ovum published last month forecast there will be approximately 3.2 billion mobile broadband subscriptions in place around the world by the end of 2015.
