The Isles of Scilly have been named some of the world's best-connected islands, in part thanks to the rollout of superfast fibre optic broadband.

A 939 km undersea cable stretching from Cornwall to Spain is delivering the high-speed technology to the islands' homes and businesses, with all 2,200 inhabitants now able to access the superfast service through their internet provider.

Scilly premises can experienced loading speeds of up to 80Mbps after gaining a connection to the fibre network, indicating a significant increase from the 8Mbps they were faced with previously, when broadband was delivered to them via a radio link.

Parliamentary Under Secretary for Communities and Local Government Lord Ahmad said the arrival of better broadband on the isles was "another demonstration that Britain means business".

"No matter where in Britain you live and work, this government is committed to empowering you with the tools you need to connect and communicate in the 21st century," he added.

Superfast Cornwall is the £132 million project behind the Isles of Scilly rollout, receiving funding from BT, the European Regional Development Fund and Cornwall Council.
