North-west firms face 'broadband speed lottery'
Businesses based in the north-west of England are facing significantly varied broadband speeds, despite the work of rollout projects to deliver a 'superfast' version of the technology to all.

The Manchester Evening News reports that research from Deloitte shows firms in the region are experiencing something of a lottery with regard to how quick their internet loads, with those in the Spinningfields area of Manchester able to access speeds of up to 87.90Mbps, while some businesses in the South Lakes can only connect to those of 4.03Mbps.

TMT Partner at Deloitte in the North-West Jodi Birkett commented: "A fast broadband connection isn't a luxury - it's completely essential for all businesses. There needs to be a better standard in the region if we're to compete with other regions."

Data from Ofcom has shown the UK's average internet speed is 17.9Mbps, meaning many north-west companies fall significantly behind this standard.

Traffic relating to a high number of people accessing the web of using the phone can affect loading speeds, but the research shows clear differences between locations in the region regardless.
