Portsmouth set for ultra-fast broadband funding boost
Portsmouth's bid for ultra-fast broadband funding has been approved.
Chancellor George Osborne announced this week that Portsmouth is one of eight additional English cities set to benefit from the initiative, along with Brighton and Hove, Cambridge, Coventry, Derby, Oxford, Salford and York.
Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds & Bradford, Newcastle, Manchester and London had previously been named on the list of super-connected cities, which will receive funding to support the rollout of next-generation wireless and fixed connectivity.
Portsmouth applied for £6 million of financial support, while the council intends to contribute at least £7 million from its own budget, local businesses and other public bodies in the city.
Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: "Digital infrastructure is a major driver of jobs and economic growth.
"We will be able to compete for business, investment and jobs with the world's top digital cities."
