Rural Norfolk could get broadband sooner than expected
Local providers could be the answer to Norfolk's current broadband woes.
Under its £30 million agreement with BT, Norfolk County Council has pledged to bring super-fast broadband to 80 per cent of local homes and businesses, while remaining areas would receive minimum speeds of 2Mbps by autumn 2015.
However, Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman told the Eastern Daily Press that he has concerns about the three-year wait and will subsequently hold a meeting this Friday (May 17th 2013) during which other providers in the region will showcase their services.
Three local firms - meshed wireless system operator ITSwisp, satellite provider Rural Broadband and Wi-Fi outfit WISpire - are set to attend the event, which will take place in Watton. Some of these companies say they can fit a connection within a month.
"If you are in a rural part of Norfolk and in a 'not-spot' it's incredibly debilitating," Mr Freeman commented. "Rural Norfolk is being seriously held back by poor telecoms and broadband."
