Rural Scotland given £2.5m boost for better broadband
The government has announced a £2.5 million funding boost will be given to rural Scotland to allow homes and businesses in the more remote parts of the country to connect to better broadband.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement while visiting a digital skills class in Thurso yesterday (14 July 2014), stating: "Improving digital connectivity doesn't just boost economic opportunities, it transforms the way people live, work and learn."

The cash is being invested in the Community Broadband Scotland rollout programme, bringing the total spent on the initiative to £7.5 million and extending its duration to March 2018 at least.

In addition to this, the Scottish government has invested a huge £410 million in the country-wide Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project, which intends to connect 85 per cent of premises in the area to the high-speed technology by the end of next year.

However, the more rural Scottish communities will not necessarily benefit from this rollout, which is where the extra £2.5 million of funding comes in.
