Shetland MSP urges residents to attend broadband meetings
Residents and business owners in Unst, Yell and Fetlar in the Shetland Islands have been encouraged to attend a meeting to discuss the future of their broadband connectivity.

Shetland MSP Tavish Scott said that meetings will be held this evening (13 August 2013) at Mid Yell Hall and on 15 August at Fetlar Hall to talk about the findings of the recent North Isles Broadband Survey.

Everyone is welcome and the floor will be open to questions for the Community Development Companies and Community Councils.

It is hoped that the discussions will highlight how broadband can be improved in the local area, with seven out of ten businesses currently only receiving download speeds of 0.5Mbps or less.

"The government is continuing to invest in improving broadband across Scotland but … new money must be targeted on areas where the current service is somewhere between poor and non-existent," Mr Scott commented.

A community enterprise called the Unst Partnership is currently campaigning to be connected up to the fibre optic network provided elsewhere by Shetland Telecom, the Shetland News reports.
