Superfast West Yorkshire announces further broadband rollout
Superfast broadband is coming to more homes and businesses in West Yorkshire.
Although 7,000 premises have already gained access to better broadband thanks to the regional rollout project, the new communities set to be connected will take the total to 12,000 by the end of the year.
Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills at Wakefield Council Denise Jeffrey hailed the announcement of the extension, stating: "This is fantastic news for businesses and people across the district and will help to improve services for residents."
To deliver the superfast technology, engineers are to lay hundreds of kilometres of fibre cables, while also installing a number of new green roadside cabinets throughout the area.
Overall, £21.96 billion is to be spent on rolling out the innovative technology in the region, in addition to network provider BT's £2.5 billion nationwide project to bring better broadband to UK residents.
By the end of next year, it is hoped 97 per cent of residential and commercial properties in West Yorkshire will be able to access loading speeds of at least 2Mbps.
