Business leaders in Ulverston have welcomed the historic Cumbrian market town's inclusion in the first tranche of communities to benefit from the county's super-fast broadband partnership with BT.

The town is one of the first six locations to be upgraded in the £70 million rollout, along with Carlisle, Penrith, Maryport, Workington and Dalton-in-Furness.

By 2015, the project - known as Connecting Cumbria - aims to bring super-fast speeds to 93 per cent of homes and businesses across the county.

Ulverston Business Alliance (UBA) Chairman Archie Workman said the organisation has worked alongside local MP John Woodcock and leading local companies to ensure that the community is "in the vanguard" of the deployment, reports the Westmorland Gazette.

"High-speed broadband is a vital asset to serve the needs of businesses based in the area and those seeking to expand or relocate here and we are delighted with this announcement," he commented.

Mr Workman added that the UBA is looking forward to hearing further details about the rollout, which will get underway later this year.
