Universal broadband will rely on many technologies, says expert
Robert Sullivan of Broadband Delivery UK has said satellite and wireless broadband will assist in achieving universal internet access.
Broadband Delivery UK chief Robert Sullivan told delegates at last week's Westminster eForum that a number of innovations will need to be utilised if universal coverage is to be achieved.
Mr Sullivan was quoted by tech news website V3 as saying: "There is a role for all technologies to play - including fibre, wireless and satellites - as the economics of each swaps as you go further into remote areas."
He went on to reveal that the super-fast broadband trials in four areas of the UK - North Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Cumbria and the Highlands and Islands - are likely to cost between £5 and £10 million each.
Elsewhere at the eForum, chief analyst at Point Topic Tim Johnson warned the £530 million pledged by the government to achieve universal broadband will prove to be "not nearly enough".
